BECTU members eligible to take part in the Labour leadership contest will receive ballot papers this week.
Electoral Reform Ballot Services Ltd is administering the ballot on behalf of the Labour Party. Ballot papers are being sent by post today, Tuesday 31 August.
Members will also receive a covering letter from Gerry Morrissey, general secretary, in which he writes:
"BECTU has not nominated any specific candidate for the leadership and members are free to vote as they wish. We urge you to use your vote so that we can mount a strong and credible opposition to the hostile and negative policies of the current Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition."
Voting in the ballot closes on Tuesday 21 September, with the results set to be announced at the Labour Party's conference on Saturday 25 September.
BECTU's journal editor, Janice Turner submitted a number of questions to the candidates; answers were published in the Aug/Sept issue of Stage Screen and Radio. Full transcript of the candidates' answers.
BECTU members eligible to vote are those who pay the political levy and who reside in Britian. Members in Northern Ireland, Ireland and overseas are not eligible to vote.
