Maurice Marshall, long-standing union member, BECTU representative and devotee of quality training and health and safety in theatre, died on Saturday 10 July aged 76.
Gerry Morrissey, general secretary, issued the following statement:
"I am very saddened to advise BECTU that Maurice Marshal has passed away after a long illness.
"Maurice, an active member of BECTU who joined the union over 40 years ago, worked at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter. He was a valued member of the A & E Divisional Committee and of the TMA committee and was a health and safety rep and shop steward in the Torbay area.
"He was awarded the prestigious MBE honours award in 2009 in recognition of his services to the trade union and to theatre. HRH Princess Anne acknowledged this when she presented him with the award and Maurice was very proud of this.
"Maurice made a real contribution to the theatre industry and to the training and welfare of his fellow workers and will be sadly missed by his many friends and colleagues. We offer our sincere condolences to them all.
"Willy Donaghy, supervisory official for the A&E Division, will be attending Maurice's funeral."
