BECTU was saddened to learn of the untimely death of former NUJ general secretary, Harry Conroy. Report in the Press Gazette.
General secretary, Gerry Morrissey, said:
"The trade union movement has lost a true friend with the death of Harry Conroy . I met Harry first during the Wapping dispute where he supported till the end the right of union members to fight for their jobs. He carried on fighting on behalf of the NUJ and workers generally up to his death. He will be sadly missed."
President, Tony Lennon, said:
"Harry was a larger-than-life character who worked tirelessly for his members, and brought the genuine voice of the newsroom to the highest level of the NUJ. He enjoyed the company of trade unionists and politicians, and I shared many late night sessions with him at the Trades Union Congress ..... needless to say, on licenced premises! Harry will be missed by all who knew him."
