BECTU Cymru announces Theatre Diversity Action Plan launch event

31 May 2019

BECTU Cymru is to host theatre employers and community groups at flagship diversity event on 18th June 2019.

BECTU Cymru is launching the Theatre Diversity Action Plan in Wales as part of the roll-out of the union's UK plans.

Theatre employers and support organisations in Wales are being invited to sign-up and join over 100 organisations currently backing the union's plan.

As well as encouraging sign-ups, BECTU Cymru is also keen for industry employers across Wales to attend its Theatre Diversity Action plan launch event on Tuesday 18th June at the Senedd, Cardiff Bay from 12pm.

Speakers confirmed to apper at the launch event include Dafydd Elis Thomas - Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Welsh Government and actor Suzanne Packer.

It is hoped that launching this action plan in Wales will help ensure a more diverse workforce in the sector based on skills, opening up recruitment opportunities to tackle industry recruitment norms that unfortunately lead to bosses recruiting who they know and personal networks. To date, 11 employers in Wales have signed up, and BECTU Cymru is looking for more.

BECTU Cymru Manager Sian Gale said: "We are very keen that as many theatres and arts venues and support organisations in Wales as possible sign up."

"The UK Plan was launched in 2018 with almost 100 organisations signing up. Sadly only one from Wales, compared to 17 in Scotland. We are now urging theatres and arts organisations based in Wales to sign up to BECTU's Action Plan."

"It’s clear that insufficient progress has been made across the UK to make theatre more diverse either on stage and backstage."

Developed by BECTU, the media and entertainment trade union, the new action plan has to date brought together more than 90 theatres in England and theatrical producers to increase diversity across the theatre workforce, from front-of-house teams to backstage staff.

The initial Action Plan focusses on Black and Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) people, however it is relevant to all under-represented groups.
