SUBMISSIONS OPEN for the 1st Annual BECTU Future Filmmakers Festival 2019

BECTU launches its 1st Annual Future Filmmakers Film Festival in collaboration with BECTU Young Members.

To mark Year of the Young Worker, BECTU has launched its first ever Future Filmmakers Festival, which opens for submissions today (2 May 2019).

 BECTU is celebrating emerging talent across the UK at its first ever film festival, taking place September 2019, with screenings taking place at The Cinema Museum, London.

Open to its under-25s members, or any budding filmmaker who joins before 31st July 2019, BECTU is calling for submissions of 15 minutes or less that can be either fiction, documentary or experimental.

BECTU Young Members is driving the BECTU Future Filmmakers Festival with the following criteria:
  • Are you a BECTU member* looking to break into the film industry?
  • Have you made a film and want to get it seen?
  • Are you under 25 and/or is this your first year in the industry?
*Open to all BECTU members under the age of 25 or any member that joins by 31st July 2019

Terms and conditions

1. THE FESTIVAL

The BECTU Future Filmmakers Festival is organised by the BECTU Young Members’ Forum, with the aim of promoting emerging UK based filmmaking talent and celebrating the trade union’s commitment to diversifying the industry. Screenings are free to members of the union, and £5 for non-members.

2. CONDITIONS FOR SUBMISSION

The Festival accepts application from all filmmakers under the age of 25, or who graduated in the last 12 months, regardless of their country of origin, who are registered members of BECTU trade union or have joined the union by 31st July 2019. All shooting formats are accepted and films can be either fictional, documentary or experimental. The length of the films must not exceed 15 minutes. The deadline for submission is 31 July 2019. Simply upload your film to a host website (e.g. vimeo, youtube) and send the link via email to futurefilmmakers@bectu.org.uk, providing a viewing password if necessary. We cannot accept files. We will also need you to provide details of your name, age, training institution (if applicable) and membership number. Winners will be contacted by email supplied. Submission is free. It implies the acceptance of the present terms.

3. SELECTION PROCESS

The Selection committee is composed of members of the Writers Producers and Directors committee of BECTU trade union. Every film submitted is watched by the committee. Applicants will be informed of the shortlisting of their film in September. The final selection form must be filled, signed and sent back to the Festival in time in order for the film to be selected. There will also be an opportunity for the ‘people’s choice’ winner, an email vote promoted on BECTU social channels.

4. SCREENING PROCESS

Shortlisted films will be screened on Monday 30 September 2019 at the Cinema Museum in Kennington, London. The screening event will begin at 7pm and will be followed by a keynote speaker and Q&A discussion.

5. AWARDS

A confirmation e-mail will be sent in September to specify the categories which will be awarded and the details of the prizes. Award-winner films are encouraged to use this label for promotional purposes: “[Award title] – BECTU Future Filmmakers Festival 2019”.

6. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

You must own the intellectual rights to the film you submit, and acknowledge that BECTU is not liable for any claims or expenses asked from any third party regarding rights matter.

7. REGISTRATION CONDITIONS

Submitting a film to the festival and participating in the festival implies the full acceptance of the terms mentioned here above.
