Brexit migration plans will cause anxiety in creative sector, says BECTU

Plans to rely on Tier 2 visa scheme "entirely inappropriate"

Media and entertainment union BECTU has responded to the government's latest Brexit migration proposals.

Head of BECTU Gerry Morrissey said: “After such a long wait for some clarification we have now been presented with proposals that will raise anxiety for EU workers in the UK creative sector and make employers consider whether the UK is the place they want to be based for future projects.

“Large portions of the entertainment industry rely on an international workforce. The Tier 2 visa scheme is already stretched and would be an entirely inappropriate way to address future migration from the EU. For example, many people working in the creative sectors are highly skilled and earning above the salary threshold, but will not be able to demonstrate that they have the right level of qualification to enter on this type of visa.

“The government must take into account the long term needs of workers and businesses ahead of short term political interests.”
