After negotiations between BECTU and Shakespeare’s Globe, the theatre’s tour guides have accepted a pay increase of 2.9%. The pay deal was approved by members in December with backdating to 1 November 2017.
Along with the pay offer, the talks secured an upgraded set of terms and conditions.
In future training courses will be opened up to tour guides on the same basis as they are offered to other staff. Management also renewed the assurance on no compulsory redundancies as a result of the theatre’s redevelopment plan, Project Prospero.
Progress too on the long discussed issue of tour numbers. Going forward, the theatre has agreed to limit the tour size to 45 customers per tour where possible.
Sofie Mason, negotiations officer, said:
“We are delighted by the constructive meetings we have had with management and feel that The Globe is now committed to addressing the guides’ concerns over larger and larger tour sizes which strain the voices of the guides as well as the patience of the customers; the new agreement is a real step forward."
