Staff at five Picturehouse sites set to strike this weekend.
2 August 2017
BECTU members at five London Picturehouse venues will stage further strikes this weekend.
Staff at the Brixton Ritzy and the Central, Crouch End, East Dulwich and Hackney Picturehouses will be on strike from 4pm on Friday 4 August until 5am on Sunday 6 August. Picket lines will be in operation 4pm-8pm on Friday and Saturday.
Support from other venues
The strikes will bring the total number of stoppages since September 2016 to close to 60. The protracted dispute, which seeks to get the profit-making circuit, owned by Cineworld, to commit to paying the Living Wage - currently £9.75 in London, £8.45 outside London - is also supported by union members at the Duke of York's in Brighton. Support for the dispute is spreading to other Picturehouse venues.
This weekend's action comes ahead of a tribunal hearing in London on Thursday 10 August to hear claims of interim relief on behalf of three BECTU representatives from the Ritzy cinema who were summarily dismissed in June. BECTU maintains that the dismissals amount to victimisation for trade union activities and wants to see all reps reinstated.
Re-run of ballots
From 9-29 August ballots for industrial action will be re-run across all named sites to renew the industrial action mandates and the legal protection which goes with that authority.
