Picturehouse workers strike again on Saturday 25 February

23 February 2017

Workers at four Picturehouse venues are to stage a further 24 hour strike starting at 6am on Saturday 25 February in support of their campaign for the London Living Wage.

Screenings at Brixton's Ritzy and the Hackney, Central and Crouch End Picturehouses will all be affected. The strikers, and their supporters, will be staging a rally in London's Leicester Square on Saturday 25 February from 12 noon. Please go along to show your support.

The company has refused to negotiate on a pay claim which seeks:

  • London Living Wage (currently £9.75 an hour)
  • Company sick pay for all
  • Company maternity/paternity/adoption pay
  • Pay rises for supervisors, managers, chefs, projectionists and sound technicians.

Members at the sites were balloted for strike action and returned a 95% vote in favour on a turnout of 75%. The first strike involving all four sites took place on 11 February 2017; the second will happen on Saturday 25 February ahead of Oscars Sunday.

In 2015, Cineworld, parent company to Picturehouse, and the second largest cinema circuit in Europe posted profits of £83.8million.

Union recognition

Workers at the Hackney, Crouch End and Central Picturehouses also seek recognition for their chosen union, the BECTU sector of Prospect. Recognition would mean that the company would agree to meet regularly with BECTU sector members and representatives to negotiate over pay and conditions. Union recognition is in place at The Ritzy.

The fight for fair pay across Picturehouse cinemas began at The Ritzy in Brixton in 2014 and escalated further in 2016 when management refused to negotiate with workers over their claim for the London Living Wage and improvements to basic conditions (see above).

The Living Staff Living Wage campaign has now become the biggest cinema workers campaign in UK history.
