BECTU's second assistant general secretary election process for 2012 is now underway.
This time members in the London and Regional Production divisions are being invited to elect their assistant general secretary for the five year period from January 2013.
The nomination period opened on 10 July and because of the summer season will run until 12 noon on Monday 1 October. Branch secretaries have been written to with guidance on the election process and with an invitation to nominate their preferred candidate. Members can login to access the branch circular here.
Should more than one person be nominated, a ballot would get underway on Wednesday 17 October with a closing date of Monday 19 November. All members in the London and Regional Production divisions would be entitled to vote.
The branch circular, issued by general secretary Gerry Morrissey, set the context for the current election:
"Martin Spence was elected as Assistant General Secretary for the London and Regional Production divisions from effect from 8 January 2008. Under the rules of BECTU, and in law, the office is subject to re-election within five years. The ballot will be conducted under the Alternative Vote System."
