BBC Wales faces 24-hour strike

18 August 2011

BECTU members at BBC Wales are to strike for 24 hours on 26/27 August in a dispute over compulsory redundancies. Notice of the planned action, which will affect sites in Cardiff and Bangor, was served on the BBC today (18 August).

The jobs of four editors and one assistant producer are at risk and the union believes that management could do more to redeploy the people affected.

“We are firm in our belief that redeployment opportunities are available in these instances and that compulsory redundancies can be avoided. We urge management, even at this late stage, to look again at the possibilities,” explained BECTU official, David Donovan.

Support for the action is expected to be strong; the strike will start at 03.00 hours on Friday 26 August and will continue for 24 hours.
