Jeremy Hunt publishes Ofcom's BSkyB report

25 January 2011

Jeremy Hunt has at last (today, 25 January) published Ofcom's report into News Corporation's proposed takeover of BSkyB.

The culture secretary received the 156 page report - which recommends referral of the bid to the Competition Commission - on 31 December.

It has also been announced that News Corporation is to be given an additional six months to address the competition issues raised in the report ahead of any formal referral.

BECTU is one of several campaigning organisations which urged Jeremy Hunt to publish the report. Assistant general secretary, Luke Crawley, spoke at the public meeting in parliament on 12 January organised by the NUJ.

Serious risk to UK media

BECTU is concerned about the serious risks to range and depth in UK media which the proposed takeover poses. News Corporation has extensive UK media interests in newspapers, radio, terrrestrial and satellite broadcasting in addition to substantial holdings in the US, Asia and Australia.

Public opposition to the takeover has grown since the company confirmed its intentions on 3 November 2010. Sign the latest petition posted by 38 Degrees.

Last week BECTU encouraged all members to question their MPs on the issue.
