The new benefit for BECTU freelancers launches 1 May 2019.

BECTU’s new combined freelancers’ insurance, PLI Extra  – available from 1 May 2019 – brings together public liability insurance (PLI) and personal accident cover for the first time.

The two-in-one plan, which will cost just £38 per year for UK-based* BECTU members, will cover the individual member, a Ltd company where the member is the sole employee, and a formal partnership where the partner is also a BECTU member who subscribes to the insurance.

*NB: For Republic of Ireland members who currently hold BECTU’s PLI a renewal rate of £50 applies for 2019-2020; new Republic of Ireland members will be asked to pay £150.

Great value cover

An essential part of any freelancer’s toolkit, PLI Extra – arranged for BECTU by creative industry insurance experts Hencilla Canworth – offers great value cover including:

  • Public Liability Insurance cover on claims up to £10m, including provision for claims up to £25,000 in respect of goods in the member’s custody and control (up to a maximum total of £100,000)
  • Personal accident cover for injuries suffered at or on the way to work – £100 per week for up to 52 weeks where injury forces a member aged under 70 to stop working (excluding the first fortnight); a £20,000 lump-sum payment in the event of specified serious injury or death for a member aged up to 70, and reduced lump sum payments for members aged 70 to under 75 and 75 to under 80.

Claims made under PLI Extra will be subject to a BECTU member remaining in membership, with up-to-date subscriptions.

BECTU members already subscribed to our current PLI plan will be invited to renew their cover, with personal accident insurance, in March 2019. From 1 May 2019, PLI will only be available under PLI Extra, with personal accident cover.
