Key Skills for Negotiators

Provider

BECTU

Course description

The 'Negotiation Skills' course is part of the core programme of courses for BECTU branch officers, stewards, and workplace reps. These courses deal with the four core areas of union activity - 'Representing', 'Communicating', 'Organising' and this one, 'Negotiating'.

The ability to negotiate is one of the key skills that BECTU representatives need to carry out their role. This can mean a formal set-piece negotiation or simply a 'one-to-one' discussion. Either way training is essential.

Who should attend this course?

Local branch officers, shop stewards, any reps with responsibilities for dealing directly with employers (or any other group you might negotiate with).

You should attend at least the Branch Reps part 1 and Branch Reps part 2  and preferably Branch Reps part 3 as well before this course as they contain information and resources that you will need to know before attending this course.

Please check with Training Officer Brian Kelly if you are unsure which course to attend or in which order it is best to take the courses.

If you are an elected or nominated  BECTU representative then you are probably entitled to time off for training by law. In addition all reps courses are free to attend and BECTU will pay reasonable expenses to enable you to attend.
