Course description

The first choice of professional editors everywhere. This is an intensive two day introduction to the very latest version of Final Cut Pro 7. You will learn the key editing functions of this creative software, from gaining familiarity with the user interface to learning how to capture footage, edit, add and manipulate sound, music, colouring, graphics, encoding and basic DVD authoring. 
Those taking the course should leave feeling empowered in taking their video ideas forward into a practical finished project.
The course will cover most basic editing functions. You will become familiar with the user interface, learn to capture footage, edit, add and manipulate sound, music, colouring, graphics, encoding and basic DVD authoring. The course is limited in numbers, allowing for plenty of individual help and advice.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, our aim is that you will:
  • Be familiar with the capabilities of the software
  • Have gained a basic working knowledge and practice in using the above aspects of FCP
  • Feel more confident in embarking on simple projects using FCP

Who Should Attend?

Anyone with an interest in learning the basics of Final Cut Pro. You should be familiar with basic computing, No experience of Macs necessary.


Tutor: Richard Hughes

 Biog: With ten years experience in broadcast & post-production, Richard has developed a wide range of skills including: offline / online  editing, grading, sound mixing, and compositing.

Credits include, BBC, Five, Sony, History and Discovery HD.

He has an MA in Interactive Digital Media and is experienced in a  variety of formats and platforms including: web, mobile, TV and DVD platforms.

In addition to his broadcast work, he runs the post production course, part time at Ravensbourne. He has also facilitated courses for  broadcast freelancers at BECTU for 4 years, and as guest speaker at 
Video Expo on ‘The craft of editing’.

He trained as one of the first FCP trainers in the UK at Apple HQ and is presently an accredited professional.

Learning Environment

There will be a maximum of 6 students on the course. Teaching will be a mixture of guided demonstrations, self-determined learning and practical exercises. We encourage students to ask questions and to let the tutor know what you would like to achieve from the course.

Additional note on accessibility

BECTU is in the process of making our facilities accessible to all, but unfortunately at the moment this training room is not fully accessible. There are small steps to negotiate and a flight of steps down to the learning centre. Duration

This is a two-day course, from 10am-5pm on both days, with one hour for lunch (not included).
