Course description

Good communications skills are essential for effective union reprsentatives. Especially speaking in meetings and conferences . This course will introduce you to the techniques and practical skills of how to speak effectively in public.

You will find out how to prepare to deliver a speech, how to structure it into a cohesive presentation - you will then get the opportunity to deliver in a public meeting scenario. This course is agreat way to build confidence and improve your public speaking skills.

Who should attend this course?

This course is aimed at experienced representatives who have previously attended a union reps course (either one of our own or one run by the TUC or GFTU) - or who have substantial experience as a union representative. The course assumes that participants will have sound knowledge of trade union and employment issues.

Please check with Training Officer Brian Kelly if you are unsure which course to attend or in which order it is best to take the courses.

If you are an elected or nominated  BECTU representative then you are probably entitled to time off for training by law. In addition all reps courses are free to attend and BECTU will pay reasonable expenses to enable you to attend.

Learning Outcomes

'Learning outcomes' are a way to describe what a course or a workshop will contain. Instead of listing what is included we spell out what you will be expected to know by the end of the course. By the end of this course you will have learned more about:
