Talks at arbitration service ACAS to resolve a dispute with the BFI over pay have broken down.

A claim for a cost of living increase by the recognised unions, BECTU and Unite, was rejected by BFI management and yesterday's talks failed to achieve the hoped for breakthrough.

Emergency meetings of BECTU members have been called for Tuesday 30 March at the Southbank and Berkhampsted sites. Unite is also arranging urgent meetings to update its members on the detail of the ACAS discussions.

BECTU, national official, Pat Styles, said:

“We went to ACAS with the expectation that the BFI would have taken note of our members’ anger at the rejection of the joint unions' pay claim and would come to the table with a reasonable offer for a cost of living increase.

"No such offer was forthcoming and as a result of this negotiations have broke down.

"I urge all BECTU members to make every effort to attend the meetings on Tuesday so that we can discuss and agree how we will respond to this disappointing turn of events.”

'the door remains open'

Supervisory Official, Willy Donaghy, said:

“We have made clear to the BFI's managers that the door remains open for them to make a reasonable offer to our members. The ball is now firmly in their court if they wish to avoid this matter escalating.”
