A new initiative sees BECTU as a one of the sponsors of The Next Generation event, part of an extended Television from the Nations and Regions Conference for 2009.
This Nations and Regions Conference focuses on television from outside London and is a nationally recognised event which this year takes place at the Lowry in Salford. The conference is traditionally held for one day in the middle of January to start the years’ broadcasting debates.
This year, Salford University, the principle conference organiser, has decided to extend the event over two days. As a result BECTU members have a unique opportunity to raise the union’s profile and to establish new connections in the North West.
“We wanted to build on the success of our 2007 North West Fair held in Manchester but BECTU’s commitment to three other regional events this year meant that resources were a little over-stretched."
"However some imaginative lateral thinking has enabled us to ‘partner up’ with other well respected organisations with benefits for us all,”explained North West Freelance branch chair, John Handley.
Experienced producer, Ed Pugh, himself a BECTU member, is one of the lead organisers.
"On the afternoon of Monday 19 January, the day before the main TVN&R conference, we will explore how the next generation of talent can tap into what Media City UK has to offer and how these possibilities can be turned into real lifelong jobs," explained Ed Pugh.
The Next Generation event will allow 60 recent graduates to meet with representatives working in both production and technical departments. North West Vision and Media and Manchester Digital are valuable contributors to the programme. The three hour event, which is free, will also allow for one-to-ones with guest speakers. Participants can also take advantage of a £10 discount on the price of entry to the main conference on 20 January making the cost £60 instead of £70.
BECTU's Learning Organiser in the North, John Crumpton added “The Television in the Nations and Regions conference is really important to BECTU members. They have an opportunity to take part and to help keep the union at the centre of developments at Media City UK both for current and future members.”
