4 February 2010
Members are invited to apply for a bursary in support of trade union related training or study established in the name of Alfie Squires. The deadline for applications is Friday 9 July 2010.
Alfie Squires was a larger-than-life and much loved NATTKE and BETA activist who died at a tragically early age in July 1990. He had striven tirelessly for the creation of BECTU through the amalgamation of ACTT and BETA which happened six months after his death.
Alfie was made the first honorary member of BECTU posthumously. In his memory the union's National Executive Committee makes available each year the sum of £5000 for bursaries towards trade union-related education. Applications are open to BECTU members and are particularly welcomed from those who might otherwise not be able to follow trade union studies.
Awards are made at the discretion of the NEC, and are intended as a contribution towards course fees and books. Applicants seeking a sum of money which leaves further assistance available to other members may receive preference. (Please note that assistance is not available for vocational training.)
In previous years, bursaries have been awarded to support participation in a diploma in contemporary and comparative trade union studies, a certificate in professional development in union learning, health and safety qualifications and an Msc in educational multimedia.
Download the application form (member only) or apply to David Cormack, administrative officer, dcormack@bectu.org.uk or to Tracey Hunt, thunt@bectu.org.uk and one can be posted to you. All applications must be returned no later than Friday 9 July 2010. Early returns are encouraged.
