Cineworld pay talks to continue in January

15 December 2009

Talks to conclude negotiations on the pay review for Cineworld members will resume on 12 January.

The agreement on fresh talks follows members' rejection of the company's proposed three-year deal in a consultative ballot which concluded in November.

we will seek a pay offer that has no unacceptable strings attached

The company had proposed an increase of 2.2% from 1 October 2009, with any increase in 2010 and 2011 to be determined by an as yet unspecified "percentage pay pot" set by senior management.

BECTU had recommended acceptance of the proposals as the best that could be achieved by negotiation. Members voted against the three-year settlement by a majority of two to one.

A meeting of representatives on 2 December said that members had rejected the deal because it tied the union's hands for too long; it was also reported that members were unhappy that colleagues subject to disciplinary penalties in 2010 and 2011 would also suffer a cut in any pay award.

Post-ballot talks with management - described as "frank and constructive" - took place on 9 December but these failed to secure a breakthrough.

Writing to members following the ballot result, Willy Donaghy, supervisory official said:

"...... we will seek a pay offer that has no unacceptable strings attached. This is not an easy task and we thank you for your continuing support, and for the very clear mandate that you have given to the negotiating committee."

BECTU members have been invited to contact us with any queries about these negotiations.
