The union's annual Women's Conference - this year provocatively titled Why Women? - delivered a day of information, inspiration and fun.
Fifty women from all parts of the union came together at TUC Congress House on 25 October to learn more about their union, to acquire new skills and to share their experience of working in the media and entertainment sectors.
As usual Kate Elliott, equality officer and event organiser, excelled with a programme which took in several subject areas. Presentations from general secretary, Gerry Morrissey, and the TUC's head of equality and employment rights, Sarah Veale, were much appreciated as was the range of workshops and the end of day social, in the shape of a pub quiz.
What did delegates enjoy most? Here is what they said:
- "Sarah Veale speech – wonderfully presented compact info that caused me to question many of my own methods and ways of thinking."
- "Gender & Globalisation’ session – provocative, interactive & interesting."
- "Gerry Morrissey discussing the wider union issues in the context of political parties and what the future holds."
- "Gender & Globalisation’ workshop. Stimulating – made me think a lot and I like Angie’s training style."
- "Networking with other female members and the diverse nature of everyone’s jobs in the industry. Also the green issues that were raised, and creating points to return to work with and implement."

The Women's Conference is just one opportunity during the year when women in BECTU have the opportunity to come together. The next opportunity comes on 21 November when BECTU women will be supporting the Reclaim the Night walk through London.
Women branch representatives are also invited to take advantage of the year-round reps training programme led by training officer, Brian Kelly, and of the union's links with the TUC and the GFTU, organisations which deliver reps training across the UK. Contact us for more information about training.
BECTU's next annual conference takes place in Bournemouth on 15 May 2010. We look forward to welcoming more women delegates there.
