BNP on Question Time: what next?

Nick Griffin's performance on BBC Question Time last night has united the media today (Friday). His performance has been largely condemned as dismal.

The BNP leader's weak justifications for his extremist, far-Right beliefs will galvanise the political opposition to him and, most importantly, should encourage those voters who delivered a platform for the party in the European Parliament to think again about the further damage which the BNP would do to UK society.

Griffin's expressed support for the Ku Klux Klan, his refusal to condemn Nazi atrocities and his homophobia should be enough to convince anyone who believes in tolerance, mutual respect and multi-culturalism to recognise that the BNP has no place in our progressive community.

Commenting on last night's demonstration and broadcast, Gerry Morrissey, general secretary, said:

"We stand by our view, which is union policy, in arguing that the BBC should not have granted a platform to the BNP. Time will tell whether the BNP secures any electoral advantage from the broadcast.

"In the meantime our members and the wider community will be concerned that everyone should be free to conduct their daily lives free from the fear and intimidation which is the BNP's stock-in-trade".

BECTU has had a long-standing policy of opposition to the BNP and to the granting of a political platform to the organisation. The union issued a statement in support of its members when it was announced last month that the BBC had invited Nick Griffin to take part in Question Time.

No union member who did not want to work on last night's broadcast was compelled to do so.
