BECTU is supporting the campaign to free the Miami Five and will be joining a vigil this Thursday 1 October to mark the 11th anniversary of the unjust imprisonment of five Cuban nationals.

Their crime? In 1998 the five prisoners informed the FBI that Cuban Americans from Miami were planning a bombing campaign in Cuba.

The consequence of their efforts to fight terrorism has been their imprisonment for the last 11 years.

To make matters worse, president Obama’s administration continues to deny visiting rights to the wives of two of the five prisoners on the grounds that permission would present a threat to US national security.

A candlelit vigil will be held outside the US Embassy in Grosvenor Square, London, W1, on Thursday 1 October from 18.00 - 19.30 hours. (Nearest tube station Bond Street).

The prisoners' recent appeal to the US Supreme Court was unsuccessful and supporters are calling on America to release them.

The gathering will hear from a number of speakers including: Jeremy Corbyn MP, Colin Burgon MP, Michael Mansfield QC and  BECTU's assistant general secretary, Luke Crawley. They will be joined by three special guests from Cuba, Adriana Pérez, Olga Salanueva, and Irma González who are family members of the Miami Five.

Further information can be found at the Cuba Solidarity Campaign website.
