MITA news

MITA chair Sharon Goode (Director, FT2) will be representing MITA at the Association of Learning Providers (ALP) Third Sector Special Interest Group meeting in October. ALP is currently reviewing the way it represents its third sector members. The meeting will focus on proposals for maximising the organisation’s support for this section of its membership. Sharon will report back after the meeting.

 

Skillset funding update

Skillset's Film Skills Fund CPD funding programme is now closed. It will re-open in October with a new set of funding priorities covering the period from October until the end of February 2010. Culture in Local and Regional Development research study

  The European Commission has launched a study to analyse the evidence of culture-based projects that received funding under the EU Structural Funds and which have had a positive impact in economic and social terms. Opportunities

Changes to First Light funding

First Light has made a number of changes to its funding schemes in order to simplify the application process. These include the removal of the cash element for match funding for Pilot Awards and a reduction of the cash element for match funding for Studio Awards. The deadline for the current round of Pilot funding is 20 October 2009, and for Studio Awards 10 November 2009. In addition, for 2009/10 First Light will specifically be looking to fund applications that include some or all of the following elements within their project: opportunities for beneficiaries aged 12 years and under; films under 90 seconds in duration for the Pilot Grant and films under 3 minutes for the Studio Grant; and non-narrative/experimental filmmaking. New courses for archive sector professionals

  MITA members FT2, VET and the Indie Training Fund are working in partnership with FOCAL International to provide a series of new bite-size professional development modules for people working in the film archive sector. The courses are supported by the Skillset Film Skills Fund. The first two sessions are scheduled for November and cover Technical Aspects of Audio/Visual Archives and Archive Rights. Call for applications: Think-Shoot-Distribute

Deadline: 5:00pm Friday 25th September 2009

 Applications are now open for this year’s Think-Shoot-Distribute scheme. The scheme offers 25 filmmakers (producers, screenwriters, directors) the chance to undertake a five-day training programme during the London Film Festival in October, which includes a series of workshops and masterclasses exploring different facets of the film production industry. It is run by the Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival, supported by Film London, Skillset, Adobe, and The Hospital Club and in association with the UK Film Council’s Development Fund. Call for submissions: Birds Eye View Film Festival

Deadline: Friday 2nd October 2009

Submissions are now open for next year’s Birds Eye View Film Festival. The organiser’s are only seeking short films for the 2010 festival. Submitted films can be in any genre but must be directed or co-directed by a woman. Call for entries: National Young Filmmakers’ Award

  Deadline: Friday 18th December 2009

 The Leeds Young People's Film Festival is calling for entries for the 2010 National Young Filmmakers' Award (NYFA), which showcases the best new films made by young people from across the UK. Entries are invited from filmmakers aged 19 or under and should be no more than 10 minutes long. Films can be in any category or genre. Shortlisted films will be screened at a special event during next year’s festival. The winning filmmaker in each age category will win £250 towards their next project.  An introduction to finding and using Archive Film in London

 A free training event hosted by Film London and the London Screen Archives. The day includes an introduction to the vast array of archive film material available in London, the best way to access the material, information on the practical and technical issues involved, as well as ideas on funding opportunities for projects using archive film. It includes presentations from the BFI, Imperial War Museum and London Metropolitan Archives, and funding advice from Film London and the Archive Lottery Adviser at the National Council on Archives. Working with Archive Film in community and outreach projects

 A second archive film training event hosted by Film London and the London Screen Archives, this time focusing on the use of archive film in community-based projects.
