BBC.com hit by budget cuts
24 July 2009
BECTU is involved in redundancy consultations affecting BBC Worldwide staff in Magazines and Digital Media.
The Youth and Children’s division of Magazines is undergoing changes following a decision to require staff to work across several titles. Managers wants to reduce the headcount by 11.

BECTU believes that a voluntary redundancy trawl should achieve the necessary reduction and has argued that any shortfall should be met by 'bumping', an approach which allows staff unaffected by the reorganisation, but who are interested in voluntary severance, to be replaced by staff who wish to remain in employment.
Lessening the impact of job losses
There is also the possibility of mitigating the proposed redundancies further by offering staff five or 10 month engagements on partworks. Through these measures, BECTU hopes that compulsory redundancies can be avoided.
The situation with bbc.com is more bleak, however. Planned reductions in content and a 90 per cent cut in the marketing budget put six posts at risk of closure; these positions were created just 18 months ago.
Consultations are continuing for both groups of staff.
