BECTU is urging policy makers to keep public service broadcasting in their sights as work continues to progress the government's Digital Britain strategy.
BECTU is joining with its sister organisations in the Federation of Entertainment Unions to host a discussion about alternative sources of funding which could be used to secure the future of the UK's public service broadcasting.
The debate, to which MPs, policy makers and industry professionals have been invited, will be held on Monday 22 June at the School of Pharmacy, 29-39 Brunswick Square, London, from 12.15 - 14.00.
The NUJ's general secretary, Jeremy Dear will chair the event. Speakers will include:
- Steve Morrison, chief executive, All3Media
- John Smith, general secretary, Musicians' Union
- Luke Crawley, assistant general secretary, BECTU
- Professor Patrick Barwise, London Business School.
Central to the discussion will be the IPPR report commissioned by BECTU and the NUJ which sets out the case for a levy system to help to support public service broadcasting for the longer term.
The report, Mind the Funding Gap: the potential of industry levies for continued funding of public service broadcasting, was released in April 2009.
The chairs of BECTU's BBC and Independent Broadcasting divisions will also be invited to join this debate. Contact Paul Evans, FEU Coordinator for more information.
