Red Bee Media seeks job cuts

6 June 2009

Red Bee Media wants to cut thirty jobs from its Creatives team in addition to halving the number of stenographers it employs in access services.

This week's announcement kicks off a six-month consultation period; further talks will take place on Tuesday 9 June.

Two hundred and twenty staff are employed in the company's Creatives team whilst the access services division employs 23 stenographers.

A trawl amongst the affected staff will identify the extent of interest in voluntary redundancy, however, BECTU is not convinced that the job cuts can be achieved by voluntary means. The union is committed to opposing compulsory redundancies.

Open meetings for staff

Red Bee staff and BECTU members will have an opportunity to discuss the union's response to the plans at open meetings on Thursday 11 June; these sessions will form part of a day of union activity at Broadast Centre.

The programme is as follows:

  • 10.30 - 17.00 - BECTU recruitment and information stand , Broadcast Centre, all staff welcome;
  • 12.30 - Red Bee Media branch annual general meeting, Viewing Lounge. Guest speaker, BECTU president, Tony Lennon. All BECTU members on site welcome.
  • 14.30 - Access services open meeting, Football Meeting Room
  • 15.15 - Creatives team open meeting, Football Meeting Room.

Commenting on this latest threat to jobs, national official, Suresh Chawla said:

"It is essential that we are proactive in these difficult times and ensure that we maximise our membership across the whole of Red Bee Media.

"Job cuts are proposed at all levels and departments and we must ensure that all colleagues are protected and represented in addition to being in a position of strength to oppose any unreasonable changes to terms and conditions.

"All members are urged to make a concerted effort to recruit fellow colleagues and to invite them to meet us on 11 June."
