Trial starts for new code of conduct for theatre get-ins

27 May 2009

A new code of conduct for theatre get-ins, fit-ups and get-outs is being trialled from this month.

The code is the result of detailed work by a joint working party which drew representatives from the TMA (Theatrical Management Association) and BECTU.

The code aims to "set minimum standards to ensure safety for all get-ins and get-outs. Additionally, where appropriate, it suggests best practice which should be adopted wherever practicable."

If the code, which is presented as a draft, operates successfully during the trial, theatre management and staff in more than 200 theatres UK-wide will be operating to the same or similar standards when getting shows in and out of theatres. The trial runs from 25 May until 31 July 2009.

This greater consistency of operation should improve operations from a health and safety and efficiency point of view, says BECTU.

The new code of conduct addresses issues such as:

  • staffing
  • operational supervision
  • working hours
  • drugs and alcohol
  • personal protective equipment
  • training
  • loading/unloading; and
  • reporting.

"The management of get-ins and get-outs has long been a complex and contentious issue in theatre and an area of major importance because of the health and safety risks. Our hope is that this code of conduct will be the start of better practice in this key area," commented BECTU supervisory offiical, Willy Donaghy.

If the trial is assessed as successful, the Code of Conduct will be formally adopted by the TMA in April 2010 and will appear as an addendum to the TMA/BECTU national agreement.
