BECTU has worked with the Camera and Editors Guilds to establish a new collecting society, Screen Craft Rights.

Screen Craft Rights, the new collecting society representing UK Cinematographers, Editors, Production Designers and Costume Designers, is now up and running and distributing money.
The new body is a response to the more inclusive definition of grades credited with 'author' or 'creator' rights which exists outside the UK.
Here, in film and TV, only directors and writers are recognised as 'authors' or 'creators' entitled to receive payment for the commercial exploitation of their works.
More extensive creative rights
Other countries, such as Germany, take the view that the list of 'creators' is longer and should include cinematographers, editors and designers. The practical result is that when a UK film is shown in Germany, the German collecting society puts aside money for the benefit of individuals working in these roles.
Until now, no UK-based collecting society has been in place to liaise with its German counterpart to receive this money and to distribute it to the people for whom it is intended. That gap has now been filled. Screen Craft Rights has been set up by BECTU working closely with the Camera Guilds (BSC and GBCT) and the Editors Guild (GBFTE).
Martin Spence, assistant general secretary said:
“It has taken several years of preparatory work, clearing the decks and liaising with societies in other countries, to get to this point. But Screen Craft Rights is now established and is delivering practical benefits to some of the most creative craft practitioners in our industry.”
