Interested in setting up a co-operative? Initial help is available through a set of factsheets produced by Co-operatives UK.
The factsheets explain what a co-operative is, what its merits are as a business model and how to approach set-up. The guidance also covers legal forms, finance and sources of support. Access the guidance here:
Factsheet No 1 - What is a co-op?
Factsheet No 2 - Why choose a co-op?
Factsheet No 3 - How to set up a co-op
Factsheet No 4 - Legal forms
Factsheet No 5 - Finance
Factsheet No 6 - Support
BECTU has a keen interest in co-operatives and is currently in year 2 of a two-year project helping freelance members to examine the pros and cons of the co-operative.
Project research, compiled with the assistance of Co-operatives UK, suggests that for some the co-operative could deliver a better way of managing and organising work in the media and entertainment sector.
Dubbed Co-operative Cast and Crew, the union's project is supported by the Union Modernisation Fund. For more information contact the project manager, Spencer Macdonald.
