BECTU has welcomed Scottish TV's plans to increase regional news output with the launch of extended distinct services to be produced in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Starting later this year the new services will deploy more multi-skilling and automation.
BECTU is an active supporter of regional news and is keen to continue discussions with STV to contribute to the success of the project. That said, the union has sounded a cautionary note to register the interests of BECTU's technical members in the new roles in development.
Commenting on STV's announcement on 18 January 2011, Scottish organiser, Paul McManus said:
"We welcome STV's programming investment. However we have insisted that equality of opportunity is established with regards to training."
"Technical staff must be offered journalism training in the same way that journalists will be offered technical training so that all affected staff are in the best position to secure work on the new services."
