BECTU has negotiated with a new public liability insurance provider and is pleased to announce that from 1 May 2012 participating freelance members will benefit from a much higher level of cover for a lower premium.
New policy from 1 May 2012
Importantly, the limit of members’ indemnity will double to £10,000,000. In addition improvements extend to cover for property loaned to and in the custody or control of members - up to £25,000 per claim (subject to a maximum £100,000 per individual during the policy period).

Members can opt for cover under the union's group policy at a reduced premium of £21 for the policy year, an improvement on the 2011 figure of £23.
The new policy, brokered by Hencilla Canworth, runs from 1 May 2012 - 30 April 2013.

Key improvements
Under the new policy the excess for other third-party property damage claims will reduce from £500 to £250.
In addition the £100,000 limit for claims involving goods in the custody or control of the member extends to each individual member rather than to the membership as a whole as previously.
New providers
BECTU chose industry specialist brokers, Hencilla Canworth and they negotiated the policy with International Insurance Company of Hannover Ltd (Inter Hannover) on a three-year fixed-rate agreement.
In the past, some members working in small companies have mistakenly thought that they couldn’t use this cover whilst in many cases, they can. BECTU advises everyone with an interest in PLI to examine the Key Facts document carefully.
Renewal letters were circulated in March 2012 to all members covered by the 2011-12 PLI policy.
